Christmas in February  for the children in Jamaica W .I. Though there were several delays, the children were quite happy with all the gifts they received from A Child's Cry Christmas campaign. The children were exceptionally grateful and they had a wonderful time.

ACC ....adopts a school

Cheapside Early Childhood Institution, established in 1987 has been serving the St. Elizabeth community by giving the hope of a sound education, nutritious meals and a loving environment to its students.  Enrollment has grown from 17 students during its inception to 150 students currently.  Cheapside focuses on the individual needs of the children and provides scholarships to those children who are in need.  For those children receiving the scholarships, they also receive well balanced meals that are for some their only nutritious meal of the day.  Without the scholarships theses children would be unable to attend any type of school and due to severe living circumstances, they would be left unattended and unfed for the majority of the day.

ACC has been sponsoring a number of Cheapside’s  students for the past year.  The great success experienced by these children sparked the school to ask ACC to sponsor more children in need.    ACC dug deep and with the help of your generous contributions, ACC was able to provide Christmas for all the children at Cheapside.

The children and the teachers were so grateful for the concern and assistance that the school orchestrated a mini “thank you” concert.  All classes offered something different.  Some classes offered songs of gratitude; some classes offered hand crafted thank you cards and other classes offered poems.  Hugs, smiles and laughter were the constant outpouring of the children.  The hearts of all involved were deeply touched because we were all witnesses to the beauty that can be restored when a few work together for the greater good of the many

Children gather for  ACC toy distribution

From the main road we could glimpse the children in their daily hub, of carrying buckets of water from the river to wash clothes or trading fruits and vegetables, gathered earlier that morning, with their neighbors.  Because communication by phone is so very limited, ACC was not sure if all of the children were aware that ACC was on its way in a van filled with Christmas gifts, clothes and snacks for the children.  Our query was quickly answered.  As soon as the van turned off of the main road onto the mud and rock pathway that lead to the designated meeting place, there were children everywhere.  Suddenly we were surrounded by excited, sweet faces that we have come to know so well over the past eight years of service.

Excitement was exploding from every corner and at times it was hard for the volunteers to keep up with the demand, but we managed.  The time was so fleeting.  After we gave out the toys and clothes, one of the volunteers gathered the teen girls together for a "girls thing". We can  still hear the giggles of the girls.

Along with the "girls thing" there were also games and competitions that were meant to provide the kids with gifts and also to expose them to values and  concepts like recycling, environmental health and community solidarity.

As always, the children were so magnanimous that one could almost forget the painful fact that many of these children may not have a suitable place to sleep or a decent meal to eat.

For some of these children, food, clothes and safe sleeping accommodations are unobtainable. We still have so much more to do. For our very generous sponsors, we would like to say thank you again - none of this would be possible with out your help.  And yes, you do make a difference.
